Theaster Gates creates work that focuses on space theory and land development, sculpture and performance. He redeems spaces that have been left behind, bringing the conversation of space to the forefront of contemporary art practice to bridge the gap between art and life. In all aspects of his work, he contends with the notion of Black space as a formal exercise - one defined by collective desire, artistic agency, and the tactics of a pragmatist. He was the winner of the Artes Mundi 6th prize, the Nasher Prize for Sculpture 2018 and is the recent recipient of the Legion d'Honneur, awarded in 2017.
